Taylor Farm Schoolhouse
My wife’s family is originally from Iowa and on a trip back there, we had a chance
to visit what had been her Grandparent’s farm. It had recently been sold to a neighbor
farmer and all that was left of the buildings was a small schoolhouse that served
the surrounding farms.
My wife has fond memories of visting her grandparents on the farm during the summers.
While exploring the school, we found a number of items that she rememebered - her
grandparent's old sofa, her grandmother's old coat. We also found records from the
farm and old school books that had her father's name written in them.
The lone schoolhouse in disrepair has obvious symbolism. One can see the decline
of the family farm in America and the echoes of past generations. My goal in creating
these images was to simply document what was there and to capture the memories for
my wife and her family.
