Artist Statement

Photography to me is an editing process. To select a piece of the world, reduce it to a narrow view two dimensional object. Sometimes creating it in color, other times in monochrome or black and white. My goal is to create an image that will not only speak to the viewer, but to enter a dialog with them. To bring questions to the viewer’s mind, answering some and expanding on others.

To capture the image, I use both digital and traditional film. However to create the final print I work exclusively in the digital domain. This allows me a greater range of exploration than the traditional darkroom. I shun fancy Photoshop effects and keep the image true to the world. I don’t have a concrete workflow and instead let the image guide its own creation based on my initial visualization of the subject. Primarily I print using carbon based pigments on rag paper.

My work is evolving from classic landscape that treats the photographer as an observer to one that involves my interaction with the space. I have also begun introducing time into my images by emphasizing the “capture the moment” aspect of photographs. My goal is to give the viewer the sense of a continuum of existence around the subject instead of a static image.
